Varejo de MS registra modesta recuperação de 0,4% após dois meses de queda


The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released on Wednesday (17) the results of the Monthly Trade Survey (PMS) for November 2023. After two consecutive months of decline, retail trade in Mato Grosso do Sul showed a 0.4% increase in sales volume, indicating a recovery in the sector.

The survey analyzes the gross revenue from resale in formally established companies with 20 or more employees, whose main activity is retail trade. The data reveal that retail trade in Mato Grosso do Sul was the standout, recording a 2.8% increase compared to November 2022.

In the expanded retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and construction materials, there was stability in November (0.1%). There was a 6.8% increase in sales volume compared to the same period the previous year, resulting in a positive accumulated variation of 5.3% over 12 months.

The national scenario also showed a positive variation, with Brazilian retail trade increasing by 0.1% in November, according to seasonally adjusted data. Among the states, Espírito Santo (13.3%), Paraíba (1.8%), and Amapá (1.6%) led the growth, while Goiás (-4.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-4.1%), and Tocantins (-2.2%) were among the states with negative performance.

In the annual comparison, retail sales in November 2023 showed a 2.2% increase, with 18 of the 27 states showing positive results. Highlights include Espírito Santo (12.4%), Maranhão (11.7%), and Ceará (8.0%). On the other hand, Paraíba (-16.4%), Roraima (-5.2%), and the Federal District (-4.7%) were among the states with negative rates.

In the expanded retail trade, the annual variation was 4.3%, with 19 states showing growth, led by Maranhão (17.0%), Espírito Santo (15.7%), and Ceará (12.4%). Mato Grosso do Sul (-11.5%), Roraima (-10.0%), and Paraíba (-9.2%) were the states with negative performance.
